Before We Get Into It

What this guide actually covers

St. Lucia doesn't really do “basic.” This is the island with two volcanic spires rising straight out of the ocean, a volcano you can drive into and then steam in, and a resort scene that ranges from couples-only infinity pools welded to a cliffside to laid-back beach hotels a five-minute walk from the same sand everyone else paid five times more for. It's also more mountainous and spread out than its flatter, more paved-over neighbors, which means where you stay here matters more than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean — pick wrong and you're looking at an hour-plus drive to dinner every night.

Section 1 — Best Time to Visit

Quick answer

Mid-December through April. That's the dry season here — lower humidity, the least rain you'll see all year, and average highs sitting in the low-to-mid 80s°F. It's also peak season for the entire Caribbean, so resort rates and flights climb right along with the calendar, and the two weeks bracketing Christmas and New Year's are the most expensive, most fully booked stretch of the entire year.

From Section 2 — Luxury Accommodations.

"Book the largest plunge-pool category you can afford — with no fourth wall, the pool is doing a lot of the work that a balcony would do anywhere else."
