Before We Get Into It

What this guide actually covers

St. John is the Caribbean island most Americans don't realize they don't need a passport for. About sixty percent of it is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, there's no airport, no cruise port crowds, and no currency to think about — it's simply U.S. soil with significantly better beaches. That combination has made it one of the most beloved islands in the entire Caribbean for a certain kind of traveler, and one of the most confusing to actually plan for, since half the usual “Caribbean trip” logistics simply don't apply here.

Section 1 — Best Time to Visit

Quick answer

Mid-December through April. This is dry season across the U.S. Virgin Islands — consistent sun, lower humidity, highs in the low-to-mid 80s°F — and also peak season, when villa and hotel rates climb right alongside the calendar. The two weeks around Christmas and New Year's are the most expensive and most fully booked stretch of the year, by a wide margin.

From Section 2 — Luxury Accommodations.

"Book the included Sunday chef's table buffet if you're staying multiple nights — reviewers consistently call it a highlight."
