Before We Get Into It

What this guide actually covers

Let's get one thing straight: Roatán's reputation as a cruise-ship day-stop and a dive-shop island is only half the story — and the less interesting half. Yes, the cruise terminals at Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole dump a few thousand people into Gumbalimba Park and West Bay Beach every morning. But the island is thirty-seven miles long, and past the West Bay strip it's Garifuna fishing villages, a working marina town in French Harbour, and some of the best diving in the Caribbean without a Caribbean price tag attached.

Section 1 — Best Time to Visit

Quick answer

Mid-November through April. That's the dry season — steady trade winds, warm days in the low-to-mid 80s°F, and the calmest, clearest water for diving and snorkeling all year. It's also peak season, so dive packages and beachfront rooms fill up and cost the most around Christmas week and Easter.

From Section 2 — Luxury Accommodations.

"Book a beachfront room on the West Bay side, not the marina side — the price difference is small and the view difference is not."
