Puerto Vallarta gets filed under "resort town" by people who haven't spent time here, and that's a genuine disservice to a city that has an actual downtown, an actual working malecón, and a colonial-era Zona Romántica that predates the tourism industry by a couple of centuries. The Hotel Zone and the all-inclusive strip along Banderas Bay are real and worth knowing about, but they're one layer of a place that also has Sierra Madre foothills rising straight up behind the beach, a genuinely excellent restaurant scene built by both Mexican and international chefs, and some of the best whale watching in the Pacific from December through March.
