Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are two towns sharing one bay, and they couldn't be more different. Ixtapa is a purpose-built resort strip of high-rise hotels along a groomed beach, planned by the Mexican government in the 1970s the same way Cancún was. Zihuatanejo, a few minutes south, is the real fishing village that predates all of it — cobblestone streets, a working pier, and a genuine Pueblo Mágico feel that Ixtapa's newer hotels can't manufacture.
